As your team grows and projects increase, the job of systemizing tasks and activities becomes more complex. If you’ve been looking for a software that will help you stay on top of the game, you’ve probably come across: Trello and Asana.
Both tools have excellent features to help you manage tasks and teams. So how do you decide which is better for your business?
Let’s take a look at the two platforms:
What is Trello?
Trello is an online tool for task management. It uses the Kanban project management system. You can set up each task in a “card” and list them on a board. Think of it like using sticky notes on a wall to keep track of projects. You can attach files to each card and hold discussions on each card.
A typical board consists of three sections: Things-to-do; work-in-progress; and finished tasks. But you can have as many sections as you wish on each board. Just drag cards from one section to the other as they progress.
Simple and pretty too!
What is Asana?
Asana is a task management tool that lets you organize activities into three classes: present, forthcoming and later. In other words, it helps you organize all your tasks in a timeline format. You can also cluster individual tasks under a project or divide them according to projects, purpose or theme.
You can create various projects on Asana, each with a list of tasks and sub-tasks. You’ll stay on top of the game by tracking the due dates and you can collaborate by having separate conversations around different tasks and sharing files.
The two platforms have plenty in common. You can create tasks, organize them in sections and categorize the tasks. They make it easier to manage your projects. Plus, you can keep an eye on who is assigned the tasks or sub-tasks. Also, you can invite users, comment on particular tasks and see previous conversations.
The main difference between the two platforms is that Asana uses a workflow functionality approach. Once you create a project, you can add and label a column for each step on the project. You can then create (drag and drop) tasks across the workspace as they progress.
Trello, on the other hand, is a tool where the workspace consists of “cards” for each project. You can add lists and attachments to the card. But, unlike Asana, you cannot label and track different tasks on a particular project (card) separately. This makes it hard for multiple users to handle different projects at a time. Trello can get quite confusing in such cases. But its simplicity is awesome. My way around this is to create a different board for each different project and then create various cards under each list.
Trello’s visual and interactive approach makes it an excellent choice for a quick roll-out of a not-so-complex project to a medium team. Asana, on the other hand, is a little harder to figure out but it’s a well-rounded project management tool. The portfolio feature will help you to create and keep track of multiple projects at a time.
The size and complexity of your teams and projects is the determining factor.
